European Steel industry examines further complaints

The European Commission with today’s publication in its Official Journal (C 29 of 01/02/2008) opened anti-dumping proceedings against imports of stainless steel cold-rolled flat products (SSCR) from China, South Korea and Taiwan as was requested by EUROFER, the European Confederation of Iron and Steel Industries, on October 29.

“We welcome the news that the preliminary analysis of the European Commission confirms that there is sufficient evidence both in terms of dumping and injury caused to the European industry to justify the initiation of a proceeding”, says Gordon Moffat, director general of EUROFER. The main cause of the massive flood of SSCR imports into the EU market witnessed in 2007 is the excessive capacity development in China, fuelled by subsidisation and the fragmentation of the local industry.

Moffat adds, that Eurofer is actively examining the situation of other steel products in view of additional anti-dumping complaints against imports from China soon.

Represented by EUROFER, the European steel industry is the world leader in its sector with a turnover of EUR 140 billion and direct employment of 370 thousand people, producing 200 million tons of steel per year.
